Solomon Asante can now play for Ghana
Berekum Chelsea midfielder Solomon Asante has been cleared to play for Ghana after doubts over his nationality were finally settled.
Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has named him in his 24-man to play Malawi and Liberia from next week.
The midfielder was dropped from the previous Ghana squad for the 2014 World Cup qualifiers in June because of doubts over his nationality.
The Ghana-born diminutive player featured in just one friendly match for Burkina Faso – where he plied his trade two years ago.
But as a precautionary measure, he was left out of the team that played Lesotho in June as Ghana wanted to avoid the situation where they could be made to forfeit their points for fielding an ineligible player.
Now the Burkinabe football authorities have confirmed that he only played in a friendly match which means he will is eligible to play for Ghana as his parents are from the West African country.
“We sought clarification from the Burkina FA and they have confirmed that he only played for them in friendlies,” coach Appiah said.
“This means he is eligible to play for Ghana as he is Ghanaian by birth.”
Asante came off the bench to play in Burkina Faso’s 3-0 defeat at the hands of South Africa in August 2011.
He also played in a tournament for the Burkinabes but they now say it is only a friendly tournament.
He trained at the Gomoa Fetteh Feyenoord Academy before moving to ASFA Yennega
